PS Students Take On the KidWind Challenge

InstagramNews February 9, 2024

Prospect Sierra 7th and 8th grade engineers blew us away at this year’s @KidWind_Project NorCal Challenge at @calmaritime! They won 1st place gold, placing at the top of the middle school teams and outscoring all but one high school team! 🥇

The students’ wind-turbine designs are based on a unit in 6th grade colab. Everyone learns how electricity can be created by turning a generator, and how this can be accomplished by getting turbine blades to spin. Over several classes students design their own wind turbine blades by experimenting with various shapes and sizes, and other variables such as materials, angles, and number of blades.

In after school colab classes, teacher David Gould helps motivated students further hone their designs and build and test their turbines, culminating in the KidWind challenge. During the competition, students tested out their designs in the university’s wind tunnel and got a tour of the on-site ship afterward!
