Alumni Action Award

Reflecting the value our community places on encouraging young people to become agents of change in the world, each year Prospect Sierra celebrates several alumni who have made an impact in social or environmental justice with the Prospect Sierra Alumni Action Award.

The 2017 overall winner is Liza Corr (’06) for her work on the Mexico-US borderlands with No More Deaths, whose mission is to end the death and suffering that is occurring near the borderlands. From Liza’s statement: “No More Deaths runs several projects. I work mainly with our Desert Aid working group, helping to maintain a year-round humanitarian presence in the deserts of southwestern Arizona. We work in the remote corridors into which migration has been pushed, where people walk 30 to 80 miles, far from any sort of life-saving care. Volunteers like me hike the trails and leave water, food, socks, blankets, and other supplies. Under the direction of our medical team, volunteers provide emergency first-aid treatment to individuals in distress.”

The 2017 winners in our high school and beyond age bracket are Isabel Detre (’16) and Sierra Luce (’16). Isabel and Sierra created Knitting to Make a Difference which makes and distributes warm items to our local homeless community. They state: “We aim to tackle some of the self-esteem related issues the homeless often face by giving them items that help them stay warm and feel good about themselves. Our second goal is to unite our neighborhood by teaching people how to knit, building a community of dedicated knitters who want to make a difference!”
