PS Alums Making an Impact – Reina Bonta (’13)
Congrats to Prospect Sierra Filipina alum, Reina Bonta (’13) (@reinabonta), who wrote the film Lahi (@lahishortfilm) which has been accepted to six film festivals so far! The film tells the story of when a young Filipina disconnected from her culture returns to O’ahu to sell her grandmother’s home after she passes away. She is haunted by her grandmother’s apparition and confronted with a task she is unsure she will be able to complete.
October is Filipinx Heritage Month!
The celebration of Filipinx American History Month in October commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, California.
Filipino Americans are:
⭐ the second-largest Asian American group in the nation.
⭐ the third-largest ethnic group in California, after Latinas/os and African Americans.
