Honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day

InstagramNews October 17, 2023

To honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day, our 3rd and 4th graders led us in a special assembly last week. They read Prospect Sierra’s Land Acknowledgement, taught us the concept of the Honorable Harvest, and shared connections between the Ohlone community values and Prospect Sierra’s Community Agreements.

Students also taught everyone our learnings from the Ohlone Sisters. For the past two years, the @ohlonesisters, Carla and Desiree Muñoz from the Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe came and shared their culture with Prospect Sierra.

Carla and Desiree taught us the Rumsen language, one of eight Ohlone languages. We remember learning how to count to three: Imala! Utiz! Kapez!, and how to show appreciation by saying OH! in a strong voice. We learned a fun game called Bear, Salmon, Mosquito, and finally, sang a song of gratitude for Ishmen, the sun.

At Prospect Sierra, we invite our community to consider our past, present, and future relationships with Indigenous people as we continue to listen, take responsibility, and change our actions for our future.
