Election Prep in 8th Grade Humanities

InstagramNews October 16, 2024

Leading up to Election Day, our 8th graders are diving deep into the Constitution, the values our country was founded on, and voting, past and present, in this country.

After thoroughly investigating the history and content of the Constitution, students are forming arguments about how this document was designed to guard against tyranny.

As a class, 8th graders defined a wide range of values and had discussions at home and school about their own values. They are noticing how geography shapes our views as they hear kids from across the country speak about what American values are to them.

And while learning about various forms of voter suppression like ID laws and purging, students are grappling with the concept of voting as a right vs. a privilege and the question of whether voting in this country is too hard.

Kudos to our Humanities teachers Howard and Matthew for helping their students to unpack why it can be so hard for people to agree about political issues, how we got here, and to identify the ways they can effectively engage in today’s political system!
