8th Graders Create Floating Tables

InstagramNews January 15, 2025

Take a look at these incredible “floating tables” crafted by 8th grade students in our colab! These tables are built using the concept of tensegrity (a term coined by Buckminster Fuller), which allows structures to stay stable without rigid supports. This fascinating principle is used in architecture, biology, and robotics.

Each group began by designing and testing a cardboard prototype, ensuring it could be supported with wires or string. After that, they moved on to creating their actual wooden tables using a wide array of woodworking techniques. The final results fall somewhere between sculpture and furniture—both elegant and playful!
