The 6th Grade Genius Hour
How do igloos stay warm? Why are video games so addictive? What is the Multiverse Theory? These are a few of the topics our 6th graders chose for their first Genius Hour project in science. The name “Genius Hour” comes from the idea that anyone can build Genius in any area if they are interested and dedicate time and energy to learning.
After students settled on their questions, they searched for sources that could help answer their questions and practiced evaluating websites for reliability. They turned their research into stories by creating short videos explaining their topics, then concluded with a Genius Hour film fest.
At the beginning of the year, 6th grade science teacher Jo asked her students to strike poses that made them feel like scientists. These portraits hang in the science room to remind our 6th graders that they are all scientists!
