Funding Priorities

Like independent schools across the nation, Prospect Sierra depends on fundraising as a critical component of its operating budget. Our fundraising priorities include the following:

Annual Fund

Each year, all members of our community are asked to make a tax-deductible gift to Prospect Sierra’s  Annual Fund, our most important fundraising activity. The Annual Fund raises up to 6 percent of the school’s operating budget and helps pay for the everyday essentials our school needs to ensure the exceptional quality of our program. Annual Fund revenues help Prospect Sierra provide critical funding for classroom resources; professional development and growth opportunities for faculty and staff; and tuition support to ensure a diverse student population that reflects the broader community.

Major Gifts

A robust major gifts program allows independent schools to move forward significant strategic initiatives outside of a capital campaign. Major gifts are donor-directed, larger-scale gifts in support of transformative programming and big ideas, and they are made in addition to annual gifts.Like capital gifts, major gifts are often paid out over multiple years. Recent major gifts have funded significant enhancements to our program, provided funds to renovate flexible classrooms, and underwritten faculty professional development in teaching social emotional curriculum.

The school’s first endowment fund, the Leo Gaspardone Scholarship Endowment, was established in 1997 to honor our retiring head of school, Leo Gaspardone. It was created specifically to build a robust source of funding for tuition assistance. We have since added a 30th Anniversary Endowment to provide unrestricted Board-designated revenue. A strong endowment can give students from across the Bay Area’s broad socioeconomic spectrum the opportunity to experience and benefit from a Prospect Sierra education. And that’s to the benefit of all. “Cultural literacy cannot be learned from a book; it is an experience that must be accessed through proximity and collaboration.” To learn more about the making a gift to our endowment, please contact the Office of Advancement at

Capital and Special Campaigns

Campaigns help a school think big, and that’s just what Prospect Sierra is gearing up to do. As was announced at the 2016 State of School address, Prospect Sierra has ambitious plans for the future.
