Poem: Taking Flight: Building for the Future

" We have so many dreams for new and better ways to teach our students — things we cannot do now because of our space constraints. We cannot create really large pieces or use certain media; we don’t have the space to display student work respectfully or store it safely. The new art classroom will take our teaching and learning to an entirely new level. "

— Julie Ouellette

art teacher

“ I wondered why we needed new buildings originally. Now, seeing how excited our kids and teachers are with the new libraries and other spaces, I think: we have to finish this job. Anything less and we can’t really claim the kind of quality we are so proud of. ”

An Exciting Announcement
to the Prospect Sierra Community

With great pride and pleasure we announce that the school has been awarded a $500,000 capital grant from the Oakland-based Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation. This grant, the largest in Prospect Sierra’s history, has been awarded in support of the construction of an arts center and foreign language classrooms at the Middle School campus, 960 Avis Drive.

Through this grant, the Valley Foundation has recognized the value of the building project and of the school’s mission, purpose, and programs. The grant poses an important challenge to the Prospect Sierra community – to raise the balance of the $4 million needed for the building project. This is the biggest fundraising effort we’ve ever undertaken. The school’s new Strategic Plan includes, as one of its primary goals, the development of a culture of philanthropy toward the school. The grant should help foster this goal, as contribution of the Valley Foundation funds is contingent upon full funding of the building project through the generosity of the Prospect Sierra community.

The Campaign For Prospect Sierra School, To Build is to Believe is in its early stage and has received very generous support from the limited number of donors approached thus far. The Valley Foundation’s grant obviously advances this initial stage significantly. It is our hope that the campaign will move forward to our broader community this spring, and that we will have the funds raised in time to commence construction this coming summer. The Campaign Steering Committee, whose members are listed to the left, have been hard at work for a number of months establishing the campaign framework, writing the case statement, and securing support from early donors.

The new building will include classrooms for the visual and performing arts, a central element in the school’s curriculum. Renovated and reconfigured foreign language classrooms will provide dedicated spaces and enable Prospect Sierra students to experience more fully the joys and rewards of studying languages and other cultures.

More information about the campaign – including the building drawings – can be found on the school’s website: www.prospectsierra.org. Just click on the campaign logo on the bottom left side of the home page.

We are extremely grateful for the Valley Foundation’s confidence in our school and look forward to meeting the challenge this grant presents to our community.
