Ikebana means "flowers kept alive." It is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. These arrangements are very simple, with the idea that less is more. Ikebana arrangements may be a single blossom or several different kinds of plants. Usually 3 types is considered the maximum. Containers may be made of wood, lacquerware, or ceramic and are usually very simple. Often the container is designed to hang from a wall. Ikebana arrangements change with the season. Different styles and plants are traditional for different times of the year. Chrysanthemums, for example, are used in the fall.
