Homework:

I won't be posting homework until everyone gets in the habit of recording it on their own. Don't forget to plan to work on your sustainable homestead next week.

News and notes:

Happy Friday! Sorry for the lack of blog post this weekend. Blogger has been on the blink.

Joke of the Day:

An eighth grade teacher was leading a discussion on the qualifications for being president of the United States. After the teacher commented that a person must be a natural-born citizen, one of the students raised her hand. “Does that mean that if you were born by Caesarean section that you can’t be president?”

Homework:

I won't be posting homework until everyone gets in the habit of recording it on their own. Please remember to read 20 minutes a night!

News and notes:

Today we continued working on our personal narratives. I got the chance to read a few and to talk with others about the work that they've been doing. It seems to me that 6S is full of skillful writers. I cannot wait for our celebrations when we will all get to read each others work. We also spend quite a bit of time in humanities today, beginning to contemplate sustainable communties and continuing to work on our sustainable homesteads.

Joke of the Day:

Teacher: Why are you late?
Student: Because, of the sign!
Teacher: What sign?
Student: The one that says, "School Ahead, Go Slow."

News and notes:

Today 6S wasn't in homeroom very long. We had a laid back class meeting where we shared our weekends and talked about our siblings. Then we drank hot choco and read in half groups. I'm exicited to hear about what else 6S did today. What happened in work languages? What did you learn in math?

Joke of the Day:

Homework:

I won't be posting homework until everyone gets in the habit of recording it on there own. I will mention, however, that I gave homework in humanities and writing. In addition, everyone should be reading 20 minutes a night 4 nights a week.

News and notes:

Today we said goodbye to 6B who began their grand adventure at Live Power Community Farm. We also delved further into our sustainable worlds, looking closing at how to start a fire with a stick and some tinder. Tomorrow we'll continue researching other skills and tools that will be useful on our homestead.

Joke of the Day:

A city slicker moves to the country and decides he's going to take up farming. He heads to the local co-op and tells the man, "Give me 100 baby chickens." The co-op man complies. A week later the man returns and says, "Give me 200 baby chickens." The co-op man complies. Again, a week later the man returns. This time he says, "Give me 500 baby chickens." "Wow!" the co-op man replies. "You must really be doing well!" "Naw," said the man with a sigh. "I'm either planting them too deep or too far apart!"

Homework:

I won't be posting homework here until students get used to using the homework planner to record assignments. Today I only assigned writing homework.

News and notes:

We started the day singing Happy B-day to Owen and Caroline. It was a nice way to start a day that can be really difficult. We did a lot of today, discussing turning points as a way to write personal narrative, researching native plants and animals, learning how we study vocabulary in 6S, organizing our binders and making posters for our wall of fame. Wow! I'm exhausted talking about it. I'm looking forward to seeing parents tonight at Back to School!

Joke of the Day:

A mother mouse and a baby mouse were walking along, when all of a sudden, a cat attacked them. The mother mouse goes, "BARK!" and the cat runs away.
"See?" says the mother mouse to her baby. "Now do you see why it's important to learn a foreign language?"

Homework:

I won't be posting homework here until students get used to using the homework planner to record assignments. Today I assigned homework in humanities and writing.

News and notes:

Students got excited about creating their Sustainable World Homestead today. As we brainstormed flora and fauna, questions buzzed around the room about what would be possible and how to live sustainably. Because of student request we'll spend part of tomorrow morning researching flora and fauna for the sustainable world instead of quietly reading.

We examined writing by Alex Sanchez today to get some ideas about how to write personal narrative. Hopefully reading from From the Notebooks of Melanin Sun will give us more ideas about how to create a personal narrative. We also got a little more into The Misfits. We found out a little bit more about Bobby and his friends.

Joke of the Day:

TEACHER: What is the chemical formula for water?
SARAH: "HIJKLMNO"!
TEACHER: What are you talking about?
SARAH: Yesterday you said its H to O!

Homework:

I won't be posting homework here until students get used to using the homework planner to record assignments. Students have gotten homework in humanities, writing, math, science and world language so far this week.

News and notes:

Welcome to the BLOG! I hope this will be an easy way to find out what's happening in 6S. Today we started writing workshop by telling stories. We also started reading our literature book together, The Misfits by James Howe. One big thing we'll be learning this year is how to read thoughtfullly and deeply. The Misfits is a great book to start with because it is funny and touching and smart. I hope 6S enjoys it.

We also started talking about our Sustainable World. We are considering how to survive in a place making choices that don't negatively affect other people, animals or plants. It should be an adventure.

Joke of the Day:

Because the egg cracked a yolk.
