It just occurred to me we have about four more weeks of school until the winter break. On the one hand I'm amazed by all that we've accomplished together the first semester. On the other hand I think of all that's left to do!! I'm looking forward to the next few weeks. Believe it or not, when school starts again in January it will feel both familiar and entirely new. You'll have changed a lot more in 2 weeks than you thought possible. But I looking forward to exciting work we'll be doing in the spring including more writing, the Greek museum and the Asia festival. Cool!

Notes

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. We did not get the chance to talk about it today unfortunately. Hopefully we'll have some time tomorrow to share adventures of our long weekends. I choose instead to focus on introducing some new rules for our class meetings and on preparing students for my absence on Thurday and Friday of this week. I will be attending the People of Color Conference in Seattle, WA. It is a chance for educators from independent schools all over the country to get together to talk about ethnic diversity at our schools. I'm really excited about the conferences and I hope I get to share a bit of what I've learned with students and parents when I return.

Friday, most of the class gathered for pizza and movie night. Honestly it was so much, I wonder if we can do it again. During the first part of the evening there was not much movie viewing, but a lot of ear-splitting laughing, talking, and hair-styling. I'm grateful for the thanks I got from students today for the party (esp. because I was feeling a little grumpy this morning), but even more grateful that you all got to spend some time together that had nothing to do with completing assignments.

Today's trip to the Rosicrucian Museum included a long drive and required a lot of careful listening, low voices, and gentle movement. We saw a number of mummies, an Egyptian tomb, and countless cool artifacts. We also had a pleasant lunch outside in the rose garden down the street and worked out all those ya-yas that had collected during our quiet morning.

Everyone seems to agree that ERBs are not so awesome, but not having homework definitely is awesome. I'm glad that you've all been able to enjoy the break from homework this week. It sounds like everyone has been pursuing some of their other interest.

Today I assigned HW due next Wednesday: complete the map of the Ancient Mediteranean. Please don't feel like you've got to start on this work this week. You'll have lots of time to do it next week.

Today 6S is out and about working with other teachers, so I'll only get to see them during testing times and breaks. The change is schedule and the stress of testing is a lot to deal with, and even though no students have said anything about it, I'm sure they'll be happy once this week is over. I know I will. I don't like change very much and this week has been all about adjusting to something new. I'm looking forward to getting back to normal next week, at least for two days.

Joke of the Day

An 85-year-old widow went on a blind date with a 90-year-old man.
When she returned to her daughter's house later that night, she seemed upset.
"What happened, Mother?" the daughter asked.
"I had to slap his face three times!"
"You mean he got fresh?"
"No," she answered. "I thought he was dead!"

6S and 6K did great work together today revising their writing about their trips to area farms. For me as a teacher, it's been great collaborating with Kristin. I think the students have also enjoyed working with their friends and acquaintances in one of the other sixth grade classes. I'm looking forward to getting the chance to do this more in the second semester.

Notes

The first day of ERB's was rainy and dreary, but 6S did a great job throughout the day getting drafts of their Farmfolks pieces typed early in the day, and being quiet and respectful during testing. Everyone got a little stir-crazy because of testing and the weather and not so many oppurtunities to run around outside, but it looks like we mostly had a good day. 4 more days of ERB's to go.

Joke of the Day

A high-school student came home from school seeming rather depressed.
“What’s the matter, son,” asked his mother.
“Aw, gee,” said the boy, “it’s my marks. They’re all wet.”

“I mean,” he replied, “below C-level.”

Notes

Next week we'll have ERB testing all week. There will be little (10 mins) to no homework during the week, so that student can unwind and enjoy themselves after their stressful days. We've spent a little bit of time this week talking about strategies on how to take the test, how to relax before during and after, and also doing some sample questions. All this preparation is to make the test feel familiar and not so very nerve wracking. Rest up this weekend! And remember next Friday to celebrate the end the tests we'll have pizza and sweets and see a great movie together.

Joke of the Day

Three mice are sitting around drinking and boasting about their strengths. The first mouse says "Mouse traps, Ha! I do pushups with the bar". The second mouse pulls a pill from his pocket, swallows it, and says with a grin "D-Con Rat Poison". The third mouse finishes his drink, slams his glass on the table and starts to leave. The first mouse says, "Where do you think you're going?”
"Time to go home and chase the cat”

Notes

We are continuing our work on revision about our Farm trips. This has been quite difficult for all of our writers, but from the what they have shared and what I have read, I think the final product will be fabulous. It is really important that students respect the due dates and deadlines for this assignment because they are working on it with other students.

Today we enjoyed the middle school production of "Macbeth." Though I had to leave early I was so excited to see students on stage doing their best work. I have been watching with interest as students rehearse their lines and battle scenes. It was great to see their product of all their hard work.

Joke of the Day

The vocalist was practicing in the church with all the windows open.
As she stepped outside what a whiff of fresh air, she noticed the gardener trimming the shrubs. “How did you like my execution?” she asked.
The gardener without turning to look at her said, “I’m in favor of it.”

Permission slips for the Rosicrusian Museum due 11/16. The trip is 11/20.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Good luck, thespians!

Notes

We worked hard on revisions to our Farmfolks writing assignments. Students may be asking themselves, "I already wrote this, why do I have to do it again." Revisions are not things that teacher think up simply to torment students or provide homework for the evening. They are a way to take the raw ideas of an original draft in craft them into something beautiful. The strange thing about writing is that it is never done. There are papers and stories I wrote years ago that I would love to rewrite even now. Writing is a process, not a one-shot-deal.

Notes

I see many more hands up and fewer heads down during class discussions these days in 6S. That's pretty wonderful. 6Sers seem to be finding their voices. We had a great first spin at reading buddies today. Soon you guys will be doing the work without me uttering a single word.

I forgot to remind the class that an assignment was due today. Unfortunately, most students did not remember to hand the assignment in anyway. My hope is that by the end of the year, whether or not I mention it, when an assignment is due student take upon themselves to turn it in.

Joke of the Day

Grandma Goldberg, a woman of 85, was slowly ambling
down the street when she met her physician Dr. Cohen.
Dr. Cohen, a dapper graying man in his early 60's
asked the elderly lady-- "Mrs. Goldberg how are you
feeling?"

For a long moment the woman gave the good doctor a
terrible stare and then she said -- "You ask me how
I'm feeling! I'll tell you how I'm feeling!! My legs
hurt, my chest is sore, my heart is beating too fast
and I can't sleep!!! I have horrible headaches
and stomach pains too!"

The good doctor looked at the elderly lady with
compassion, "If you're feeling so awful, why don't you
come and see me right away?"

Grandma Goldberg let out a sigh and said, "I was
just waiting until I felt a little better."

Next week, we'll be taking the ERBs, we'll be preparing for these during the week.

Joke of the Day

Earl and Bob, both obsessed with baseball, never missed their favorite team’s game. They promised, whoever died first, and went to heaven, would come back to earth and tell the other if there was baseball in heaven. One day, Earl died. Bob waited for him to come back. Finally Earl did. He said to Bob. "I have good news and bad news. I'll tell you the good news first. There is baseball in heaven." Bob said, "That’s the best news!" Then Earl said, time for the bad news....”You're pitching tomorrow night."

The entire 6th grade met with Nina today to discuss cyber-bulling. There have been a couple of incidents in the past week that make it clear our students need a reminder that respect and friendship extend into the virtual world. I have been really sadden by this turn of events but I know that we will become wiser because of it.

On a lighter note, I sent home permission slips for our "Pizza and a Movie" night. I'm looking forward to watching a good movie with a bunch of kids I really like!

One more thing: if you'd like to talk to my sister Denise about her band and her music click here.

See "Unpleasant Comments on Our Blog"

Joke of the Day

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal, they lay down for the night, and went to sleep.
Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend.
"Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."
Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars."
"What does that tell you?" Holmes asked.
Watson pondered for a minute. "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.
Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all-powerful and that we are small and insignificant.
Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.
What does it tell you?"
Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke.
"It tells me somebody has stolen our tent!"

unpleasant comments on our blog

This morning I checked my email, which includes all of the comments sent to our blog. I was surprised to find two with disrespectful comments about a member of this class. It was surprising because thus far our blog space has been a lot like our classroom; somewhere that every feels free to speak their mind and sure that they will not be hurt through the words or actions of a classmate. I've decided that in order to prevent this from happening again, I will moderate our comments. This means every comment posted on our website will come to me first. If I think the comment is inappropriate I will reject it and it will not appear on our blog space. I hope that I will soon be able to allow people on the blog to monitor and moderate themselves once again. In the meantime, do not be surprised if it takes a day or two for your comments to appear on the blog.

It's hard to leave notes for everyone on Wednesday because of the faculty meeting. Hopefully I will have lots to fill you in on Tomorrow.

Joke of the Day

20 Ways To Confuse Trick-Or-Treaters I (Maybe next year)

1. Give away something other than candy. (Toothpicks, golf balls, bags of sand, etc.)
2. Wait behind the door until some people come.
When they get near the door, jump out, wearing a costume, and holding a bag, and yell, "Trick or Treat!" Look at them, scratch your head, and act confused.
3. Fill a briefcase with marbles and crackers.
Write on it, "Top Secret" in big letters. When trick-or-treaters come, look around suspiciously, say, "It's about time you got here," give them the briefcase, and quickly shut the door.
4. Get about 30 people to wait in your living room.
When trick-or-treaters come to the door, say, "Come in." When they do, have everyone yell, "Surprise!!!" Act like it's a surprise party.
5. Get everyone who comes to the door to come in and see if they can figure out what's wrong with your dishwasher. Insist that it makes an unnatural "whirring" sound.
6. After you give them candy, hand the trick-or-treaters a bill.
7. Open the door dressed as a giant fish. Immediately collapse, and don't move or say anything until the trick-or-treaters go away.
8. When you answer the door, hold up one candybar, throw it out into the street, and yell, "Crawl for it!"
9. When you answer the door, look at the trick-or-treaters, act shocked and scared, and start screaming your
head off. Slam the door and runaround the house, screaming until they go away.
10. Insist that the trick-or-treaters each do ten push-ups before you give them any candy.
