Coming up for 2007-08 (listed in reverse order)

March 22 , 7–9 pm An internationally recognized writer, editor, and speaker about issues affecting girls and women, Peggy Orenstein is the author of the best-selling book, SchoolGirls: Young Women, Self-Esteem and the Confidence Gap. A contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and the recently released memoir, Waiting for Daisy, she will discuss our culture’s pressure for perfection and how parents can best help children build confidence and self-esteem. Sure to be an engaging, enlightening and educational experience for all.

There will be a follow-up Parent Café on Friday, March 21 at the Avis campus at 8:45 am

January 31, 7–9 pm Dacher Keltner, Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, Director of the Greater Good Science Center, respected author, and fellow Prospect Sierra parent, will be discussing “the evolution of kindness and human goodness.” He is nationally recognized for his groundbreaking research into the roots of compassion, altruism, and the social functions of emotion. With inspiring stories of compassion in action, he has created a bridge between social scientists and community leaders, policy makers and educators.

Dollars and Sense: Prospect Sierra’s Mission Based Budget Process. Would you like to learn more about how the school's budget is formed each year? What are the factors that influence the tuition levels? What is this process and who is involved? Bring your questions and come find some answers to these and other topics in this year's "Dollars and Sense" coffees in January.

 

December 6, 7–9 pm Anastasia Goodstein, author of Totally Wired, believes that parents can connect to the wired generation. The world is changing and we need to keep up! What are MySpace, Facebook, Xanga, and Livejournal? Have you ever had any questions about social networking, online journaling, cell phone use, text messaging, or cyberbullying? If so, do not miss Anastasia Goodstein's talk. She will discuss how the Internet and technology can enhance a teen's (or tween's) education, creativity, and social life. Also, she will address the areas that present a challenge for young people today. We hope you will come and enjoy this lively presentation.

There will be a Parent Café on Friday, December 7 in the library at the Avis campus at 8:30 a.m. School counselor, Rick Ferm, will join us for a discussion regarding the Internet and technology.

 

November 8, 7–9 pm Regan McMahon, author of Revolution in the Bleachers, will address our "over-the-top" youth sports culture and how it is affecting kids and families. This talk will offer insights for achieving more balance for our children and ourselves.

Join us for the follow-up Parent Café on Friday, November 9 at 8:45 a.m. in the Library at the Tapscott Campus. Anton McGready (Prospect Sierra's Director of Physical Education) will join us and facilitate a discussion of youth sports and the lives of our families.

2006-07

Parent Association Community Forum Addressing Teasing and Bullying - February 6, 2007 - 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm - Avis Library.
The Prospect Sierra Parent Association is hosting a workshop led by Respect For All Project. This gathering will bring together parents to address bullying from a community perspective using the film Let’s Get Real.
Experienced trainers will present research and information about the nature and extent of bullying in schools, examining the underlying connection between bullying and prejudice, especially prejudice based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, class, and sexual orientation.
Participants will leave with an increased understanding of the role they can play in countering school bullying. They will also acquire greater resources and skills to work with schools to help their children navigate this challenging problem.

Robert Jensen, Ph.D., Wednesday, November 15, 2006, 7 – 9 pm in the Tapscott Music room. Childcare will be provided.
Dr. Jensen, professor of Media Ethics in the School of Journalism at University of Texas at Austin, and author of "The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege" (City Lights, 2005), "Citizens of the Empire: The Struggle to Claim Our Humanity" (City Lights, 2004), will speak and answer questions. If you would like to buy one of Dr. Jensen’s books, they are on sale at the Parent Association Table at the Tapscott Book fair for $10.00 each. Books will also be available the night of November 15th.

Richard Louv, Thursday, September 28, 1:30–3:30 p.m., Avis Multipurpose Room
Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children From Nature- Deficit Disorder will be speaking about why spending time in nature is so critical for our children’s creativity, development, and well being. Louv is speaking to Prospect Sierra faculty as part of the staff and faculty retreat and parents are invited to attend as well.

A discussion with Peter Cobb, a widely regarded speaker and facilitator on issues of the moral climate of schools and the moral and spiritual education of students. "Parents as Moral Partners" is a workshop designed to provide clear messages to parents on how best to support the moral development of their children and the ethical culture of our school.
