8th Grade Service Learning at Eco Village

It's hard to reject hope and Eco Village Farm Center in Richmond offers just that ~ hope. slideshow It is a small rural place with fruit trees, bees, and farm animals in an area better known for a tough urban life and oil refineries.  On September 12, shortly after school started, Prospect Sierra's new 8th graders packed their lunches, garden tools and hats and headed for the farm.  They worked throughout the day in the hot sun; pulling weeds, preparing garden beds, cleaning out animal pens, herding goats and clearing ivy from the creekbeds.  At the end of the day, the concrete results of their efforts were apparent.  Our larger hope is that they will further Eco Village founder, Shyaam Shabaka's vision of providing a place for kids in Richmond to learn about environmental and social justice issues and develop the skills for doing something about them.

"Stop! In the Name of Earth!" a mini movie of the skit by our 4th graders! (6 MB Quicktime Movie)

Stop! In the Name of Earth! Know What Your Planet's Worth!

As part of their Service Learning Program activities this year, the 4th graders brought recycling efforts to a new level at the Tapscott campus.

Honoring their hard work – and the work of previous fourth grades in getting the program started – Prospect Sierra will be awarded the Grand Prize by the West Contra Costa Integrated Waste Management Facility at the West County Earth Day celebration on April 23, 2005.  Congratulations!  And thank you for protecting our planet!

Kids That Help Kids

Below are links to several recent news stories which describe our school's support for the Center for the Education of the Infant Deaf. We are, of course, very proud of the work of the third grade teachers, students, and parents who took on this project with such heart and enthusiasm.
