Library CurriculumElementary SchoolThe 2,350-square-foot elementary school library provides a rich environment for fostering a love of books and reading, as well as instructing students in the skills necessary to use the library and its print and technology resources. Students learn how to navigate the library’s electronic catalog as well as actually browsing the shelves to find a book that suits their interests and research needs. The librarian strives to be familiar with each child’s favorite types of books and reading levels. The librarian conducts weekly classes that can include Book Talks, Read-Aloud stories, learning activities, and introductions to authors and various genres. The librarian facilitates independent research for class reports and projects as well as working hand in hand with classroom teachers to supply curriculum materials and support. Special holidays, events, and all-school activities are highlighted and integrated into the library curriculum. Students often choose to spend recess and lunch in the library enjoying quiet library related activities.Middle SchoolThe library program’s central role in the academic life of the middle school is supported by a 3,850-square-foot library space that includes a separate library classroom with computers, a comfortable sunny reading room, and a large main library space with window nooks and plenty of books. The library’s mission is 1) to enrich the school’s educational programs through access to resources, curriculum development, and skills instruction, 2) to provide for the interests and needs of students with varied learning styles, diverse backgrounds, and individual strengths and talents, and 3) to develop and nurture a love of literature and reading. The librarian works closely with classroom teachers to develop and refine curriculum, and to support that curriculum by making the wealth of library resources – books, periodicals, online sources, film, and other visual materials – available to enrich the classroom experience. All students are taught library and research skills, within the context of the classroom curriculum. These skills include use of the library catalog; location, retrieval and evaluation of information from both print and online sources; and proper citation format. The goal is to give students the skill, experience and confidence they need to conduct competent, independent research. Fifth and sixth grade students attend regularly scheduled library classes. Seventh and eighth grade students receive library instruction in conjunction with their research projects throughout the year. Students in all grades receive individual guidance with independent reading and have open access to the library for research and study, as well as browsing and pleasure reading. –Library updated fall 2006 |
